“Atop my easel are one quote and one note to remind me of where I need to be. The quote is: “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” The note is: “Think Intimacy”.
I’ve worked in commercial illustration for many years, including ten years as a newspaper editorial illustrator. Here I learned to find the truth of a concept, then marry it to a mood. Now, as a gallery artist, I choose the one mood of intimacy. I try to paint with the poet’s hand. I’m concerned with communicating this mood of intimacy through the arrangement of shapes, married to the drama of light and shadow, embraced by the power of color. Have you ever stood outside on a clear crisp night, raised your eyes and looked deep into the sky, beheld the layers and layers of stars, then felt awe and a sense of wonder and a sense of belonging, of being at one with the universe? This is my sensation when I paint. I am at one with it. I want you to feel this way too, when you allow my work to reveal itself, like layers of stars in the night sky.”
