SL Jones was born October 17, 1901 in West Virginia. His artistic career did not start until he retired from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad when he took his life long hobby of whittling and turned it into carving. Jones was widely known for his wooden figures and animal which were all carved from local trees of West Virginia. When Jones was physically unable to carve anymore he began drawing instead. His characters are drawn usually in ink or pencil and then colored with a pigment wash or crayons.
