There are things I understand about painting, things I've come to know. But only a few really. That's why I focus on Visual Energy, as loose as the term is it provides a point of departure. And not just in talking about art but in the making of it. And that is precisely where so many artist statements, or art theories fall apart. They aren't involved in the action itself. These work generally as a pre-conception or the meditation that all good work provides when completed but not during the act itself. This is why I have found the aesthetic base of abstract expressionism critical in any verbal expression of my work: the insistence of the primacy of a work regardless of external symbolic or representational reference.” - Zoey Brookshire
